KNIGHT ROUSSEAU
and
MYSTICAL MELODY
Kirsten and her daughter stood side by side at the rail at the GHF racetrack and watched the horses on the track. Two horses in particular were on their radar. This would be the last morning workout for her two top graded horses before their big races. Emma coughed a long hacking cough and leaned against her mother's shoulder. Kirsten frowned. That cough did not sound good at all. She would have to bring her in. Too many early mornings for the nine year old.
"Mom?" Kirsten continued to concentrate on the horses. "Mhm?" Emma coughed again and spit at the ground. "Yuck. Do you think next year will be a better year for us?" Kirsten shrugged. "I don't know dear. I sure hope so. I am looking forward to our new batch of two year olds next year. So we'll see." Emma nodded. "Why do you ask?" Emma shrugged. "I dunno. I guess I just miss the days when our horses were always a huge threat. Now they are all the underdogs. It's weird." Kirsten nodded. That was typical in horse racing, one minute you are at the top and the next you are pinching pennies and doing anything possible to get a win under your belt.
They looked out at the track in silence. There were so many great horses working this morning. The usual. Even though they had they best horses out there right now sometimes Kirsten wished she could just steal a few horses. She smiled. Wouldn't that be something if ever that thought escaped. The reporters would grab at any straw on that one.
The two dark bay horses ran side by side towards the wire putting in their best efforts. They were racing in two days against some top competition. They were already five years old and will probably be running their final year this year and then retiring. Kirsten wasn't worried about Mystical Melody, that mare already already accomplished a lot and will be a great broodmare. But Knight Rousseau was still only at the grade three level. He had so much more potential to give. She hoped he would get his chance at the top before the year was over...
